we invite you to our
Masquerade Ball at Court
in the
Spiegelsaal (mirror hall) at Tanzschule Strobl,
Kalvarienberggasse 28a, 1st floor, 1170 Vienna
Starts at 7.00 pm
Doors open from 6.30 pm
The landlord and landlady of the Black Eagle are hosting a party – and, of course, Francis Stephen and Maria Theresa will be there … completely incognito! This was a family tradition, for even Maria Theresa’s grandfather, Emperor Leopold I, had enjoyed welcoming his guests as a ‘simple’ landlord when he was a young man.
The court was able to turn the world on its head and appear at the so-called ‘peasant weddings’ as a cook, a farmer’s wife and servants, but also as couples in traditional dress from various nations and even as ‘exotic’ figures such as Romans, Turks or Persians – or, rather, whatever people in Baroque Vienna imagined these to be.
Following a lengthy ban on wearing fancy dress – as riots and even acts of violence had occurred under the cover of masks – the ban on masks has been lifted again since 1744 – though, of course, only for the high nobility! But as the nobility were particularly keen to draw inspiration for their costumes from the common people, ‘servants’ and ‘cooks’, couples in traditional dress, harlequins and visitors from faraway lands are, of course, all welcome!
However, we would ask that you refrain from rioting and violence.
We will play and dance ballroom dances from the 17th and 18th centuries.
